While Brady and Tanner talked in the shack, Mack and Lela talked in Mackâs bedroom.
âI love everything here!â Lela was saying as she looked through all the modern items on Mackâs dresser. âThe challenging classes. The interesting conversations. The flavored lip gloss! Vanilla kiwi-berry? Itâs delicious and keeps my lips moist!â
Lela moved to Mackâs closet next and started trying on clothes.
âLela, our world isnât all that great,â Mack said. âThereâs finals, and taxes, and global warming. You really had it good back in your world. Your hairâs always perfect. You have a boy who loves you.â
âYou have a boy who loves you, too,â Lela pointed out. âBut you want more, right? You want to live your life to the fullest. I want more, too.â
Mack paused. Lela had a point. But she couldnât admit that. She had to convince Lela to go back.
âNo,â Mack said. âBeing with the right person can actually make life more full. If you both have the same drive, the same passions. Unless he doesnât respect your passionsâ¦and keeps secrets from youâ¦or gets weird when youâre busy.â
Mack flopped down on the bed. âI donât know! Itâs all pretty confusing hereâwhich is why you should go home.â
Lela stepped out of the closet, wearing an outfit of Mackâs. She looked greatâand perfectly present-day. The magic necklace glittered around her neck.
Sheâs becoming part of this world, Mack thought. Thatâs what happened to me and Brady before we almost disappeared forever!
Mack ran into the hallway and quickly called Brady.
âWe have a situation,â she told him. âMeet me on the beachâand bring Tanner!â
The four friends met up a few minutes later. Tanner grinned when he saw Lela.
âWow, Lela! You look likeâ¦future Lela. Groovy!â he said.
âVery groovy!â Brady added.
âNo, not groovy at all,â Mack said. âSheâs not supposed to look modern. Tanner, smile.â
Tanner obeyedâbut there was no ping! this time.
Then she pulled Tanner over to the beach showers and turned them on, dousing him with water.
âHey!â he cried. His perfect hair was soaked.
âLook! Itâs wet!â Mack cried.
âWhatâs happening?â Tanner asked, panicked, as he felt his wet hair. âMy hair feels so squishy! And limp! I donât like this feeling!â
Mack pulled Brady aside. âDonât you see? The very essence of who they are is changing. They could get stuck here forever! Or the whole fabric of our reality could split open! Weâve gotta get them back.â
Brady thought. âLetâs just tell them the truth,â he said. âAbout who they are and where they really came from.â
âBut werenât we worried about what it might do to them?â Mack asked.
âWeâre running out of other options,â Brady said.
Mack nodded. She turned to Tanner and Lela and took a deep breath.
âTanner, Lelaâyouâre just made-up characters in a movie. Youâre not real,â she said.
Brady winced. âOkay, maybe I would have eased into that a little more gently.â
âWhat? A movie? I donât understand,â Lela said, her voice shaking. She fidgeted with the necklace.
Mack opened her phone and found an image of the movie poster for Wet Side Story. She showed it to Lela and Tanner.
